For web design, I work with clients to get to know them, what they need in a website, and what they want to see in the end product. Sites can be custom-built from the ground up without "cookie-cutter" templates or prefab content management systems, or I can build a theme on top of an existing backend, such as WordPress or Joomla. Avoiding CMS and templates can greatly reduce overhead and clutter to make the site as clean-cut as possible, especially for simple static sites. However, a CMS can be much more valuable to organizations requiring very dynamic sites, especially when there is a need for multiple users to be able to log in and contribute to site content.
